Tryout Process
Tryouts are typically held within the first few weeks of practice, with the official tryout date taking place by early October. Swimmers learn a short routine set to music that includes key skills our coaches want to evaluate. The process is designed to be low-stress and is primarily used to see how athletes swim together and to help determine routine placements.
There are no cuts from the team, but there is limited space on the competitive routines. Placement is based on skill level, interest in competitive or recreational swimming, and preferred routine choices. In some cases, swimmers may be asked to participate in a different routine than originally requested (for example, a duet instead of a trio) to best support the team as a whole.
As our team continues to grow, tryouts may also be used to determine routine assignments (Maroon or Gold) and, if needed, select alternates. Our goal is always to place swimmers where they will be most successful while creating the strongest possible team.
Recreation vs. Competitive Team
We offer two team options to fit different goals, schedules, and levels of commitment. Whether you’re looking for a fun, flexible experience or a more competitive season, there’s a place for you!
Recreational Team
The recreational team is perfect for swimmers looking for a flexible, low-commitment way to stay involved in artistic swimming. Practice time ranges from 1–9 hours per week depending on your availability, including one hour of coached practice, optional independent pool time, and optional dry land.
Recreational swimmers participate in the full season (September through early April) and perform in our annual show at the end of the year. The schedule is flexible, and swimmers are not required to attend every practice. Coaches provide one-on-one instruction during the weekly coached hour, with additional time available for independent practice. Swimmers may also have the opportunity to try different routines based on interest.
Fees cover general practice costs such as coaches, lifeguards, and equipment. Apparel is not included but is available for optional purchase.
Competitive Team
The competitive team is designed for swimmers looking for a higher level of commitment and the opportunity to compete. Athletes train approximately 9 hours per week, including 7 hours of pool time (most with coaches) and 2 hours of dry land. Attendance on the competitive team is REQUIRED.
Competitive swimmers participate in the full season (September through early April) and attend 3–4 meets throughout the year, including dual meets, regionals, and nationals. This team emphasizes skill development, routine precision, and team performance at competitions.
Fees cover practice costs as well as competition-related expenses, including travel and meet entry fees, USA Artistic Swimming membership, warm-up suits, caps, custom competition suits, and season apparel.
To participate on the competitive team, swimmers must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above. Additionally, competition rules limit teams to a maximum of 20 swimmers at Regionals and Nationals. While we aim to accommodate everyone who is interested in competing, if more than 20 swimmers express interest, our coaches will work closely with the team to develop a fair plan that supports both individual goals and team success. Final decisions will be made collaboratively with swimmers.
